  • Take potassium iodide (KI) only when public officials tellnyou. In a nuclear radiation emergency, radioactive iodine could benreleased into the air. KI protects only the thyroid gland from uptakenof radioactive iodine. Therefore, KI should be used along with othernemergency measures that will be recommended to you by public officials.
  • If you are told to take this medicine,ntake it one time every 24 hours. Do not take it more often. More KInwill not help you. Too much KI may increase the chances of side effects.nDo not take this medicine if you know you are allergic to iodine (seenSIDE EFFECTS below).
  • Each milliliter (1 mL) of Potassium Iodide Oral Solution containsn65 mg of potassium iodide (USP) in a black raspberry-flavored solution.nInactive ingredients are: FD&C Red #40 and Blue #1, methylparaben,nnatural and artificial black raspberry flavor, propylene glycol, propylparaben,npurified water (USP), sodium saccharin, sucrose.
  • Potassium Iodide Oral Solution is a thyroid blocking medicinenthat is used in a nuclear radiation emergency only.
  • Use only as directed by public officials if a nuclear radiationnemergency happens.
  • Dose:
  • Adults over 18 years
  • Children over 12 years ton18 yearsn- who weigh at least 150 pounds
  • Children over 12 years ton18 yearsn- who weighnless than 150 pounds
  • Children over 3 years to 12 years
  • Children over 1 month ton3 years
  • Babies at birthnto 1 month
  • Take KI every day (everyn24 hours) as directed by public officials. Do not take more than 1ndose in 24 hours. More will not help you. Too much medicine may increasenthe chances of side effects.
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding women, or babiesnunder 1 month of age:
  • Patients with thyroid disease:
  • Peoplenwho are allergic to iodine, have dermatitis herpetiformis or hypocomplementemicnvasculitis, or have nodular thyroid disease with heart disease shouldnnot take KI. n n n In casenof an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing, speaking or swallowing;nwheezing; shortness of breath or swelling of the mouth or throat),ncall 911 or get medical care right away. In case of overdose, getnmedical help or call a Poison Control Center right away.n nn

  • Certain forms of iodine help your thyroid gland work right.nMost people get the iodine they need from foods like iodized saltnor fish. The thyroid can u201cstoreu201d or hold only a certain amount ofniodine.
  • In a nuclear radiationnemergency, radioactive iodine may be released in the air. This materialnmay be breathed or swallowed. It may enter the thyroid gland and damagenit. The damage would probably not show itself for years. Childrennare most likely to have thyroid damage.
  • If you take KI, it will block or reduce the chances thatnradioactive iodine will enter your thyroid gland.
  • People should avoid KI if they are allergic toniodine, have dermatitis herpetiformis or hypocomplementemic vasculitis,nor have nodular thyroid disease with heart disease, because thesenconditions may increase the chances of side effects to iodine.
  • KI should be taken as soon as possible afternpublic officials tell you. If you are told to repeat the dose, younshould take the second dose 24 hours after the first dose. Do notntake it sooner. More KI will not help you because the thyroid cannu201choldu201d only certain amounts of iodine. Taking more than 1 dose pernday will increase the chances of side effects. The public officialsnwill tell you how many days to take KI. You should take KI until thenchances of major exposure to radioactive iodine by breathing or swallowingnstops.
  • Short-term use of KI at the recommended dose is safe. You shouldnnot take this drug for longer than you are told.
  • Possible side effects include: swelling of the salivarynglands, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach ache, fever, headache,nmetallic taste, and allergic reactions. Allergic reaction can include
  • Get medical attention right away ifnyou have trouble breathing, speaking or swallowing; wheezing; shortnessnof breath; or swelling of the mouth, tongue or throat.
  • Taking iodide, in rare cases, may causenoveractivity of the thyroid gland, underactivity of the thyroid gland,nor enlargement of the thyroid gland (goiter). Symptoms of an overactiventhyroid gland may include an irregular heart beat and chest pain.nPatients with thyroid disease are more likely to get these side effects.nBabies under 1 month of age are more likely to get an underactiventhyroid gland (hypothyroidism).
