Indications & Clinical Uses

  • Varivax is used to prevent varicella, commonly known as chickenpox. It helps the immune system recognize and fight the varicella-zoster virus, reducing the risk of infection. The vaccine is recommended for children and adults who have not had chickenpox or received prior vaccination. It is also used for post-exposure prophylaxis in certain cases.

Side Effects

  • After vaccination, the body develops immunity to the varicella-zoster virus over time. Most recipients experience mild effects like soreness at the injection site or a low-grade fever. Some may notice a mild rash near the injection area, which is generally not contagious.

Precautions & Warnings

  • Store Varivax refrigerated between 2°C and 8°C (36°F and 46°F) and protect from light. Do not freeze. Before use, inspect the vial for discoloration or particles. Discard if the vaccine appears compromised. Keep out of reach of children and pets.

Avoid Interactions

  • Varivax may interact with immunosuppressive therapies, including corticosteroids or chemotherapy. Avoid vaccination if you have a weakened immune system. Inform your healthcare provider about recent blood transfusions or immunoglobulin use, as these may affect vaccine efficacy. Live vaccines should not be given within 4 weeks of another live vaccine.
