Protonix Delayed-Release 40 mg/1 (Pantoprazole Sodium TABLET, DELAYED RELEASE) 40 mg/1

Protonix Delayed-Release is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) used to treat conditions related to excess stomach acid. It is indicated for the following conditions:

• Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD): Reduces symptoms such as heartburn, difficulty swallowing, and persistent cough.
• Erosive esophagitis: Helps heal acid damage to the esophagus and prevents further damage.
• Zollinger-Ellison syndrome: Manages pathological gastric acid hypersecretion.
• Prevention of NSAID-induced gastric ulcers: Protects the stomach lining from damage caused by nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).

• Pantoprazole sodium, the active ingredient in Protonix Delayed-Release, works by irreversibly inhibiting the H+/K+ ATPase (gastric proton pump) in the parietal cells of the stomach. This inhibition suppresses gastric acid secretion, reducing the amount of acid produced in the stomach and alleviating symptoms associated with excess acid.

Protonix Delayed-Release may cause side effects, although not everyone experiences them. Common Side Effects:

• Headache
• Diarrhea
• Nausea
• Abdominal pain
• Constipation
• Gas

Serious or Rare Side Effects

• Symptoms of a low magnesium blood level (such as unusually fast/slow/irregular heartbeat, persistent muscle spasms, seizures)
• Signs of lupus (such as rash on nose and cheeks, new or worsening joint pain)
• Severe intestinal condition due to C. difficile bacteria (symptoms include persistent diarrhea, abdominal pain, fever, and blood/mucus in stool)
• Vitamin B-12 deficiency (symptoms include unusual weakness, sore tongue, or numbness/tingling of the hands/feet)
• Severe allergic reactions (symptoms include rash, itching/swelling, severe dizziness, trouble breathing).

• Before taking Protonix Delayed-Release, it is important to consider certain precautions. Inform your doctor if you are allergic to pantoprazole or similar drugs. Tell your doctor about any medical conditions you have, especially liver disease or lupus. Some symptoms may indicate a more serious condition, so seek medical help immediately if you experience heartburn with lightheadedness, chest pain, or unexplained weight loss. Older adults may be more sensitive to the side effects of this drug. During pregnancy, use this medication only when clearly needed. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding. Store below 25°C: keep in the original pack, protect from moisture.

Protonix Delayed-Release may interact with other medications, altering their effectiveness or increasing the risk of side effects. Major Interactions (Avoid):

• Methotrexate (especially high-dose treatment): Pantoprazole may increase the risk of methotrexate toxicity.
• Ampicillin, atazanavir, erlotinib, nelfinavir, pazopanib, rilpivirine, certain azole antifungals (itraconazole, ketoconazole, posaconazole): Pantoprazole may reduce the absorption of these drugs.

Moderate Interactions (Monitor Closely)

• Other medications that require stomach acid for proper absorption: Pantoprazole may affect their effectiveness.
• Antacids: May be taken along with Protonix Delayed-Release but should be taken at least 30 minutes before sucralfate.
