Rizatriptan 10 mg is a triptan used in the acute treatment of migraine attacks. It is specifically indicated for:

• Migraine with or without aura: Provides relief from migraine headaches and associated symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light and sound. It is not indicated for the prevention of migraine attacks or for the treatment of cluster headaches. It is also not recommended for use in patients with hemiplegic or basilar migraine. The efficacy and safety of rizatriptan have not been established for cluster headache.

• Rizatriptan works by binding to serotonin 5-HT1B/1D receptors located on intracranial blood vessels and sensory nerves of the trigeminal system. This binding causes vasoconstriction of the cranial blood vessels and inhibits the release of pro-inflammatory neuropeptides, thereby alleviating migraine symptoms.

Rizatriptan 10 mg may cause various side effects, which can be categorized as common or serious/rare.

Common Side Effects

• Nausea: Feeling sick to the stomach.
• Dizziness: A sensation of lightheadedness or unsteadiness.
• Fatigue: A feeling of tiredness or exhaustion.
• Dry mouth: A lack of moisture in the mouth.
• Chest discomfort: Mild to moderate discomfort in the chest area.
• Paresthesia: A tingling or numbness sensation.

Serious or Rare Side Effects

• Cardiovascular events: Including chest pain, heart attack, or irregular heartbeat.
• Cerebrovascular events: Such as stroke or transient ischemic attack.
• Allergic reactions: Including rash, itching, or swelling.
• Seizures: Convulsions or seizures may occur in rare cases.
• Serotonin syndrome: A potentially life-threatening condition caused by excessive serotonin activity in the central nervous system.
• Angioedema: Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat.

• Cardiovascular conditions: Avoid use in patients with a history of ischemic heart disease, coronary artery vasospasm, or uncontrolled hypertension.

• Ischemic bowel disease: Avoid use in patients with ischemic bowel disease.
• MAO inhibitors: Avoid use within 24 hours of taking a monoamine oxidase inhibitor.
• Hepatic impairment: Use with caution in patients with liver impairment.

Major Interactions (Avoid)

• Ergotamine-containing medications: Concurrent use can lead to severe vasoconstriction and increased risk of cardiovascular events.
• Other triptans: Concurrent use can increase the risk of serotonin syndrome.
• Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs): Concurrent use can increase the risk of serotonin syndrome.
• Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs): Concurrent use can increase the risk of serotonin syndrome.
• Propranolol: Concurrent use can increase the plasma concentration of rizatriptan, leading to an increased risk of side effects.

• Antidepressants: Concurrent use can increase the risk of serotonin syndrome.
